Ice Run Log of January 4, 2007
When we started,
this is what it looked like at my house, down on the Plains. We were not quite
sure what we would find, once we got to Nederland. I had two assistants this
time, figuring it would be a tough job. That's Patrick and Jesse, taking a break
after punching through the first drift.
The dual storms had dumped several feet of snow, so it took all three of us to dig a path in to the shed and carry 1600 pounds of dry ice up the hill to Grandpa's cryonic chamber. Fortunately, the temperatures were in the high 20s and there was little wind. It took us almost an hour to dig and excavate a path up and around the Institute to the Shed. Then another hour to carry all the ice and re-stock the chamber.
Here's the big drift at the top of the hill with a couple of the dry ice boxes for size reference. The boxes are 16 inches. The drift is over three feet.
Here's the Shed, itself....with a four and a half foot drift to the left. You can see where we dug the path through a drift on the right...all the snow chunks.
The temperature was approximately -60 F. when we opened the cryonic chamber.
We were down to a very meager 160 pounds of ice when we added our 1600 pounds,.leaving a total of less than 1800.
I recommend the next Ice Run be on January 26th.
